Visual Coding 2021 student showreel

Visual Coding is a module offered in Music, Media and Performance Technology BSc., offered at the University of Limerick. For this project, students used the Processing development environment to create animations, using algorithmic methods.

Generated Space (2020-21) by Kjetil Golid

Kjetil Golid is a generative artist and system developer from Norway, with a keen interest in algorithms and data structures.

It was this interest that kickstarted his endeavours within generative art, originally using visualization as a tool for understanding various algorithms. These visualization exercises gradually shifted their focus from being pure, "correct" implementations of well-known algorithms, into a more esoteric realm where the underlying structures mostly serve the purpose of making intricate and aesthetic visuals.

Today, Kjetil's projects are often initiated by the question "What would it look like if ..."; an unfinished idea of a home-grown algorithm together with a visual translation, where it is unclear how the end result will look.

Generated Space is the result of a year-long endeavour to make computers do unexpected things. It presents a wide range of different generative algorithms; from organic flow fields and particle systems to rigid fractals and grammar-based shapes. Some more serious than others.

Matrix Cam (2018) by Emily Xie

Hello from inside the Matrix.

This project livestreams from your webcam to put you in the Matrix, mapping each raining katakana character to a corresponding pixel brightness / color value.

This builds on top of a previous project I'd done, which was a simple reproduction of the digital rain animation in 2D.

Made with p5.js. Emily Xie is a generative artist, engineer, and educator living in NYC.

The oscillation sandbox is an interactive website for testing various equations that create cyclical patterns. The code is for p5.js, but can readily be adapted from Javascript to the Java version of Processing.

"Two Space Emulator" (2017) by Agustin Ramos Anzorena


This tribute to Larry Cuba was created in Processing.

While researching about the pioneers in computer motion graphics, I was lucky to watch Larry Cuba’s piece “Two-Space” at the Buenos Aires Planetarium, as a fullDome experience. The animation explores the 17 symmetry groups, very present in Islamic Art patterns. The breath-taking result is a sample of the beauty that computer generated graphics could create, along with pieces like “Calculated Movements” and “Arabesque” (in collaboration with John Whitney).

This is a small tribute to Larry Cuba. A simple system of reflections with some controls to play around and create charming and elegant symmetries. A fresh canvas to maneuvers organic movements in a sort of hypnotic way.

"bamb00" (2021) by Ksawery Kirklewski for wh0wh0

This music video was created by Ksawery Kirklewski to accompany the single "bamb00" by wh0wh0 (Polish drummer Jacek Proscinski). This was further developed into an interactive website, where different versions of the video can be performed in real time.

when I heard Jacek’s ”bamb00” for the first time, I immediately got it that this task would require a special approach. Jacek’s music is insanely dynamic and sounds different on every show. Sometimes some parts take longer than usual. That’s why I started with thinking of how to make the video generative. There are so many levels and notes going on in that – for a proper visualisation – I decided to try something that would give me possibilies and also be a new thing for me: playing with 3D. Moreover, it had to work real-time for the live shows, best if 60 fps, which meant that it should be light to render and designed in a simple way.

after the work was done, we were thinking how to present the full experience of this generative feeling. I decided to recode the program for the on-line use and make an interactive website with use of p5.js (”Processing for web”).

"Happy Place" by Jared Tarbell



Happy Place renders the resulting configuration of a system of friendly nodes. They are connected at random with preferences to nodes closer. Connections between nodes are considered friendships.

Nodes position themselves with only two goals in mind:
A. Move close to friends but no closer than some minimum distance.
B. Distance self from non-friends as reasonably as possible.


This in-browser application was created in Processing and requires Java enabled.

"Node Garden" by Jared Tarbell



Nodes are instantiated on irregular curving lines. When connected together, they form a Node Garden. The lines can be considered the substrate from which the nodes grow. The linear arrangement of the substrate in these early images is mathematically simple and makes irrigation of resources easy.

The in-browser application was created in Processing. The programmer is co-founder of Etsy.

"Process 13 (Software 2)” 2011 by Casey Reas



Process 13 (Software 2) is an interpretation of the Process 13 text:

Process 13
Bisect a rectangular surface and define the dividing line as the origin for a large group of Element 1. When each Element moves beyond the surface, move its position back to the origin. Draw a line from the centers of Elements that are touching. Set the value of the shortest possible line to black and the longest to white, with varying grays representing values in between.

Element 1
Form 1: Circle
Behavior 1: Move in a straight line
Behavior 2: Constrain to surface
Behavior 3: Change direction while touching another Element
Behavior 4: Move away from an overlapping Element

Particles 01 (2012) by Damien Borowik



Work done in Processing, using Monome 40h as live performance tool. This is a recording from a live performance where I control various parameters of patterns made by simulated particles. In the memory of the Japanese Tsunami victims, and the belated Jordan Belson who inspired this piece. Soundtrack by Kenji Kawai (川井憲次): Kugutsuuta Aratayo ni Kamutsudo Hite.

Damien Borowik is a French artist based in London, UK. In his work, he explores the use of technology in the art of making and subsequent creative processes. He is also interested in the act of perception, with a strong emphasis on serendipity and aesthetics. Working across media and medium, he seamlessly embeds technology and digital processes as an integral part of the work. Borowik develops his own creative tools digitally and physically, using mechanical components, electronics and programming code. His work spans many disciplines including video, sound, light, virtual reality as well as kinetic installations and performances.

Graduated from Central Saint Martins with a BA in Graphic design, and he later on went on to study at Goldsmiths, University of London on an MA in Computational Arts. Borowik has won numerous awards and exhibited worldwide while working with clients such as Christian Dior Couture, Samsung Electronics, Southbank Centre and BBC Worldwide. Recently, the Victoria & Albert Museum have also acquired several of Borowik’s artworks to be included in their permanent collection.

"Sound Moves"

Multimedia installation combining interactivity, real time sound production and projection mapping, under the artistic event OMH - Our Media Heads at SILOS.CR

The freedom of body expression takes care of the musical content. The replacement of sound production hardware by multimedia solutions sets the future.

People are tracked by Kinect sensor's connected with Processing, then it sends midi signal for Reason5, allowing controlling synthesizers in real time with body moves.

"House of Cards" (2008, dir. James Frost)


The music video for the Radiohead song "House of Cards"was created without the use of a camera. Instead, two different techniques were used to gather data, the Geometric Information System (structured light) and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). This data was then rendered as visuals, using Processing. The data along with Aaron Koblin's code is available. For a time, a Youtube group existed, where people could upload their own interpretations. Koblin's website is also useful.

"Inferno" (2020) by Giovanni Muzio

INFERNO is a dramatic journey through the blazes around the globe to raise awareness about forest fires, not only in the Amazon but, for many reasons, across the globe. An audiovisual performance coded live, fetching both archived and real time data of the fires around the world from NASA database and their Near Real Time API. The main performance is coded in the Processing environment, in REPL/Hot Swap mode for changes on the fly without the need to recompile the sketch on each change, and it includes some customizations (GLSL shaders, data fetching algorithms…) and it communicates on the fly with Max/MSP and Ableton Live for the sounds and music.

"WITH OUI" by Rodrigo Carvalho (visuals)



"WITH OUI" is an audiovisual dance performance presented at the Ears, Eyes and Feet event in the B. Iden Payne Theater, May 2015, UT Austin Texas.

The narrative of the piece develops around human communication and mutually supportive relationships. A bright object in the middle of the stage acts as source of knowledge and connecting link between the dancers. This object contains inside a motion sensor (a Wiimote controller) and is used in specific moments by the dancers as a performative object to manipulate audio.

AudioReactive visuals were developed in Processing using Plethora library for the flocking implementation. Boids behaviour's parameters (cohesion, separation, alignment) are audio reactive. Audio analyze and other parameters controls are done live in a VDMX projec and sent by OSC.

"Emergence" (2021) by Robin Parmar for Mai

Advance video for the track "Emergence" from Mai's forthcoming album Polis, out 26 March on Wormhole World.

Mai is a pseudonym for composer/musician/producer Steve McCourt. Originally from Dublin, he now lives in Shanghai. His music fuses acoustic and electronic elements into lovely compositions that foreground subtle harmonic changes. He released a pair of albums titled Arcadia on Stolen Mirror in 2018 and 2019, followed by Gaia on Wormhole World in 2020. 

Robin Parmar created this video to honour the early computer graphics experiments of Larry Cuba. Cells of overlapping patterns generate new and unpredictable forms for the eye. A processing sketch is played live to the music, facilitating an organic flow that arises from the underlying grid.

"cf. city flows" (2016) by Till Nagel and Christopher Pietsch



cf. city flows is a comparative visualization environment of urban bike mobility designed to help citizens casually analyze three bike-sharing systems in the context of a public exhibition space. Three high-resolution screens show the space of flows of New York City, Berlin, and London through visualizing bike journeys. With our visualizations we want to understand the pulse of urban mobility, and create portraits of a city defined by its transient dynamics.

cf. city flows is an installation comprising multiple visualizations of bike-sharing journeys in three cities combining established mapping and visualization techniques within a highly aestheticized form in order to attract visitors to engage with urban mobility.

"064cde_audd" by dextroorg (2014)

Update: This artist's videos have disappeared.

Video_64 is an invitation into one's subconscious mind.

The aim was to generate the effect a waving corn field and the moving surface of water have on our mind, by mathematic means alone, and using a kind of movement that does not occur in nature. It looks natural and organic nonetheless, thereby luring the viewer into analyzing its behaviour. Ideally, this temporarily lets his/her rational mind step back and allows the subconscious mind to come to the fore, which can result in introspection and contemplation. The code is based on experiments spanning over 10 years. The sound was constructed from samples.

Video_64 is currently by far the most popular video on Dextro.org.
