"Patterns of Harmony" by Gaspar Batth



Patterns of Harmony is a mirrored projection mapping installation inspired by quantum physics and a research to find the origin of geometry. It focuses on all of nature's weird beauty, takes concepts from far beyond the perceptivity of the human mind and attempts to translate them into a unified, spatial form.

The physical object is a fractal of cubes, though it does not contain any physical cubes, only reflections and projections of it. It is built by applying a combination of rear-projection and two-way mirror foils on acrylic glass, and the final effect is achieved by mapping and projecting animated graphics on the back of the installation. Thereby the light gets “trapped inside” the object, breaks on it’s physical structure and create the illusion of other shapes, eventually letting our minds take care of the construction of the visible geometry.

"Memory Vapor" by Gelfand and Domnitch



Every second, Earth’s inhabitants are bombarded by billions of charge carriers, arriving from every possible direction in outer space. As they traverse the supersaturated gas within a cloud chamber, these subatomic messengers, known as cosmic rays, macroscopically disclose their identity and the plenum underlying the empirical void. In Memory Vapor, a particle-accelerating cloud chamber is scanned by a white laser sheet, turning its -200° C contents into a dynamic prism. Ionized nuclei, muons, antiprotons, electrons and positrons are trailed by threads of glimmering condensation droplets.

"Supersymmetry" by Ryoji Ikeda



Here's more Ryoji Ikeda, even if it's only a short preview.

Given the excitement around the discovery of the Higgs Boson, most people will know of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. But did you know they had an artist-in-residence programme?

Ikeda was the 2014 resident and produced one of his trademark black-and-white flashing data and crunchy post-digital composition. Find out more by reading Arts@CERN.

Gravity says hello



Gravitational waves from inflation generate a faint but distinctive twisting pattern in the polarization of the CMB, known as a "curl" or B-mode pattern. For the density fluctuations that generate most of the polarization of the CMB, this part of the primordial pattern is exactly zero. Shown here is the actual B-mode pattern observed with the BICEP2 telescope, with the line segments showing the polarization from different spots on the sky. The red and blue shading shows the degree of clockwise and anti-clockwise twisting of this B-mode pattern.

The BICEP and Keck Array CMB Experiments have an entire website dedicated to the discovery of gravity waves. It includes images like this, of interest to anyone intrigued by the aesthetics of scientific images.

New metamaterial manipulates sound



Materials science is advancing in leaps and bounds, creating what was previously impossible.

Metamaterials are simply materials that have been engineered to exhibit properties that are not found in nature. In this case, the structural design of the metamaterial gives it qualities that make it a “hyperbolic” metamaterial. This means that it interacts with acoustic waves in two different ways. From one direction, the metamaterial exhibits a positive density and interacts with acoustic waves normally – just like air. But from a perpendicular direction, the metamaterial exhibits a negative density in terms of how it interacts with sound. This effectively makes acoustic waves bend at angles that are the exact opposite of what basic physics would tell you to expect.

Motormouth Robot KTR-2 by Hideyuki Sawada



This robot, built by Hideyuki Sawada of Kagawa University, is designed to assist deaf students in pronounciation, as they compare the robot movements to an MRI image of their own mouth.

"Simple Harmonic Motion #12 for 16 Percussionists"



Simple Harmonic Motion is an ongoing series of projects and research investigating complexity from simplicity – specifically the emergence of complex behaviour through the interaction of simple multilayered rhythms. For more information on this series please see here.

Simple Harmonic Motion #12 is a live performance for 16 percussionists and light. In addition to the usual motivations of the series, it is inspired by the collisions between man and machine; a ritualistic ode to chaos and order; the harmonies, tensions and conflicts between science, technology, tradition and religion.

The performance was preceded by a 3-day workshop with local musicians (in this case students at the Royal Northern College of Music) familiarizing them with the concept and inspirations of the piece and preparing them for the performance.

Commissioned by FutureEverything in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music, with support from The Shed, MMU.

"Tree Radio" by Magz Hall



Tree Radio modifies trees to become radio transmitters of micro FM radio and broadcast the sound of their own bio acoustic "voices". I aim to make people think about trees and the root of all wireless technology: radio, and how simple and green it can be to use. Wireless free and solar powered. The work addresses issues surrounding the rate that new digital technology often become outmoded as it uses 100 year old tried and tested wireless technology.
