"Memory Vapor" by Gelfand and Domnitch

Every second, Earth’s inhabitants are bombarded by billions of charge carriers, arriving from every possible direction in outer space. As they traverse the supersaturated gas within a cloud chamber, these subatomic messengers, known as cosmic rays, macroscopically disclose their identity and the plenum underlying the empirical void. In Memory Vapor, a particle-accelerating cloud chamber is scanned by a white laser sheet, turning its -200° C contents into a dynamic prism. Ionized nuclei, muons, antiprotons, electrons and positrons are trailed by threads of glimmering condensation droplets.

And more from their website:

Dmitry Gelfand (b.1974, St. Petersburg, Russia) and Evelina Domnitch (b. 1972, Minsk, Belarus) create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices.

Clavier à Lumières (2012) by Charles Jarboe

Clavier à Lumières from Charles Jarboe on Vimeo.

This is a contemporary implementation of colour-music correspondence theory. 'Clavier à Lumières' (keyboard of lights) explores the symbiotic relationship between light and sound, color and tone. The study of this relationship is one that travels as far back as Sir Isaac Newton in the early 18th century with his Colour Wheel, to visual artists such as Vincent Van Gogh who would take piano lessons in order to better understand the nature of color. Composers such as Alexander Scriabin were also famously interested in the synesthetic bond between colors and musical notes and invented the original ‘clavier à lumières’ in 1910 for his orchestral work Prometheus: The Poem of Fire. His remarkable instrument was an organ that would be played like a normal keyboard, but instead of producing sound, would project colored light onto a screen. 'Clavier à Lumières 2012' looks to further delve into and string connections between two of our most vital senses. By stripping away the noise of everyday life and the sensory overload of digital and social media, this work is meant to allow the viewer to revert back to their most fundamental modes of sensation and to pique their curiosity in pure color and sound. This piece also aims to reveal the emotive qualities of sound and light and will allow each audience member to create his or her own personal experience. In this piece, the twelve notes of the chromatic scale are associated with a color from the visible spectrum of light based on Newton’s Colour Wheel. In his wheel, Newton begins with the note D representing the color Red and continues all the way to Violet, which is represented by the note C. Going further, colors on the low end of the visible spectrum such as Reds and Ambers, which have longer wavelengths, are represented by sounds of a lower pitch. These relationships build the foundation of this work.

Annular #1 (2017) by Ulrich Buddemeier

When we observe certain natural phenomena, we are intuitively drawn into and out of ourselves at the same time. Clouds, ocean waves, blades of grass moved by the wind, the slowly changing light in the desert. Boundaries become fluid. We synchronize to an external rhythm. We may become enraptured, or we may enter a state of deep introspection.

Among human-made art forms, music most directly induces these deepened or expanded states, whether through dedicated listening or getting lost on a dance floor.

These are sensual experiences, not easily conveyed through language. They are the experiences that form the foundation of my work.

Through careful experimentation and examination,I create visual environments that similarly evoke heightened, connected states of consciousness.

I invite the participant to introduce their own selection of music and observe the interaction of mind, music and environment.

A technical note regarding the image material on this site: Lumia projections are created by the interaction of light and irregular shaped optical components, accounting for their natural and organic look. No software rendering techniques are used. Due to the high contrast ratio and color saturation of laser lumia projections, it is virtually impossible to convey the actual appearance in photo or video. Please contact me to arrange for a private viewing session in the Los Angeles area.

Lumia 18 (2018) by ANNIE/M/me

Simulations of the future are done by using memories of the past. Immerse yourself in an experience that imprints you with the meditative memories of another dimension.

Transported to a parallel time, you find yourself in a hypnotic environment of sound and light that bends, distorts and reshapes into complex networks of continuously morphing displays.

Take the experience with you in your mind’s eye. Use it as a tool. Recall the movements, the rhythms, the colors, the energy moving through you bringing you to a meditative state by simply remembering.

"Radiant Live" (2019) by HC Gilje

The premiere of the live performance Radiant Live took place on Feb 23rd 2019 at Paradiso in Amsterdam. It was commissioned by Sonic Acts as part of the Expanded Experience program for the 25th year anniversary of the festival.

A large scale light painting in constant change using laser and phosphorescent paint.

A white laser beam moves over a large surface and draws lines and curves which are only visible for a very short moment before they disappear, except that the ray of light leaves traces: The surface is covered with phosporescent pigment which captures light and then emits a green shimmer which slowly fades out. The simple forms projected in bursts of light from the white laser are layered onto a constantly evolving web of green shimmering lines.

The relation between the always moving point of light and the ability of the surface to absorb and emit light creates a tension between the quick and the slow, the present moment in contrast to longer stretches of time, what is built up and what breaks down, layers of time being constantly overwritten.

Commissioned by Sonic Acts. Part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

"Blueprint" by Joanie Lemercier

The work examines the notion of blueprint as the intersection of ideation and architecture, a map that leads from formlessness to form. It explores the view of architecture as both the endless repetition of the cosmic order, and as a shelter from the infinite, a human construct that brings the capriciousness of nature into perspective.

With Blueprint, Lemercier translates the immateriality of space, architecture, and causality into a choreography of structural elements. The installation is formed from a central monolithic tower that is flanked by two large screens and activated by light projection and sound. Together, these tell a story of the cosmos and architecture, climaxing in an anamorphosis.

The audio component comprises contrabass materials recorded at EMS in Stockholm by Yair Elazar Glotman which have been processed, augmented and fused with electronics by James Ginzburg in his Bristol UK studio. The piece is inspired by the architecture of the venue, a former Phillips factory in Eindhoven Netherlands, and communicates the grandeur of the building and space, mirroring the relationship implicit in all architecture: the relationship between order and chaos.

"Hyperjump" by Tundra collective

"Hyperjump" was created as a site-specific work for one of the halls of the former First Cadets Corps, which is now being reconstructed as a study spaces of Saint-Petersburg State University. The nineteenth-century hall has a sports ground with a basketball court , built here in a soviet time.

"Hyperjump" explores the idea, set by this paradoxical combination: the basketball court, representing the physicality, we have from the nature, together with the architecture of the classicism period, the symbol of the human rationality.
25 moving head light beams on a truss stands and a powerful sound system were installed along the hall. While the light sculpture started to move, the electronic light devices came to life, turning into the actors themselves, bringing the light, shut in the strict geometry back, to its unpredictable nature

"Apophenia" by "IF"

Apophenia is an audio-visual installation, made up of 16 α lamps linked together, and controlled by a specific video timeline. Presented for the first time in Liège at Bam festival.

Apophenia is the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data.
It does not provide insight into the true nature of reality or its interconnectedness, but is a “process of repetitively and monotonously experiencing abnormal meanings in the entire surrounding experiential field which are entirely self-referential, solipsistic and paranoid” (Conrad, Klaus - 1959 / "Gestaltanalyse und Daseinsanalytik").

Seeing patterns where in fact, none exist...
