"Tango" (1980) by Zbigniew Rybczyński

This 35mm film won the 1982 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, the first time a Polish director had won an Oscar.

Born in Łódź in 1949, Rybczyński grew up in Warsaw and studied cinematography before forming the Film Form Workshop. Following the declaration of martial law in 1982, he left for the USA, where he set up his own studio in New York. His research in high-definition video and chromakeying was formative for these processes. Rybczyński combined innovation with popular video work, including over thirty music videos. Artists include Grandmaster Flash, Rickie Lee Jones, Art of Noise, Simple Minds, and John Lennon.
