Filmkomposition 1 and 2 (1922) by Werner Graeff

Werner Graeff (1901-1978) was born in Wuppertal, Germany and studied painting from the age of 16. Tutelage in woodcut and sculpture followed, the artist now interested in the movements of Cubism and Futurism. At the age of 20, Graeff entered the Bauhaus and soon excelled in photography (later designing a miniature camera). Under the tutelage of Theo van Doesburg he became the youngest member of the De Stijl movement.

After meeting both Hans Richter and Viking Eggeling, he created "scores" for two films, neither of which were completed at the time. "Filmpartitur Komp. I/22" was completed as "Filmkomposition 1" in 1958 and "Filmpartitur Komp. II/22" as "Filmkomposition 2" in 1977, just before his death.

In 1923 Graeff founded the avant-garde magazine "G" with Hans Richter. And in 1928 he co-wrote Richter's film Ghosts Before Breakfast.
