Gertie the Dinosaur (1914, Winsor McCay)

The first animation film that used the method of keyframes. Released on 15 September 1914, the animated section used 10,000 drawings, inked on rice paper then mounted on cardboard. Winsor McCay created the figures and John A. Fitzsimmons traced the backgrounds. Gertie is based on the Brontosaurus (now known as Apatosaurus) skeleton in the American Museum of Natural History.
